Who Benefits from the Expansion of Internet Essentials? Joe Certainly Does!

By: Angela Phinney, Exec. Director, The Arc Lane County

When I first heard about Internet Essentials a few years ago, I remember thinking it would be really wonderful if people with disabilities could access this program. And the recent announcement that Comcast has expanded the program to enable the population that The Arc Lane County serves, fills my heart with joy.

Comcast has been a huge supporter and valued partner of The Arc Lane County and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), providing funding to teach classes such as internet safety skills, and how to search online for jobs, etc.  The challenge was that they learned these great skills but had no access to the internet once they got home. So many people with I/DD live on Social Security Income which is less than $800 per month, with over half of that going to rent, not including other basic needs.  This leaves little extra money for “luxury” items like internet access.

But let’s be honest: the internet is not a luxury. The internet is essential for participating in the society in which we live. For example, my friend Joe, who first entered the internet classes at The Arc Lane County last year. He was excited to learn how to navigate the web, and most of all, find a job. He struggled because he had few social networks. As we know, most jobs come from who you know that can refer you to job possibilities. Joe learned through the classes how to set up a LinkedIn account and search for jobs online. But with no internet at home, he has no ability outside of The Arc to prospect potential jobs and network with employers. Many employers have switched to on-line application systems, which is a barrier to low-income individuals who do not have computers and/or internet access.  With the assistance of the Comcast Learning Lab at the Arc, Joe was able to fill out on-line applications, and has landed a job at a children’s museum. He says this is his dream job, and without programs provided through Comcast, he would not have received this opportunity.

Having access to the internet is life-changing for people like Joe. They can expand their social networks, apply for jobs on-line, make medical appointments, and even order groceries. I am truly excited to hear that Comcast is now offering Internet Essentials to a broader community. This is an opportunity to truly change the lives of individuals with I/DD.
