National Small Business Month: How Small Businesses Can Utilize Technology to Increase Productivity and a Secured Network

Teo Ramirez, owner of Los Potrillos and Comcast RISE awardee

Small businesses have had to make significant changes over the last two years. With this, came decisions around remote work, downsized workforce, and reprioritizing investments. But, during these trying times, technology became the constant. Although at times adjusting to new technology needs can seem like a daunting task, business owners realized having the right solutions in place maximized productivity so they can worry less about IT issues and spend more time growing their business.

The U.S. Small Business Administration recently reported that 99.4% of Oregon’s businesses are small businesses, and 88% of small business owners felt their business was vulnerable to a cyberattack. Another report predicts that at least 70% of small businesses are expected to operate under hybrid work models this year. Thus, keeping up with technology is critical for small businesses to stay protected and connected.

To celebrate National Small Business Month, Comcast Business has a few technology tips to help business owners in Oregon/Southwest Washington:

Leave Administrative Tasks to Automation

All business owners have a list of things they would do if they just had the time. Investing in automation allows business owners to focus on value-add activities.

Teo Ramirez, owner of Los Potrillos restaurants in Eugene, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington was planning to open two more locations before the pandemic forced him to lay off most of his employees. As a recipient of the Comcast RISE award, Ramirez received a “technology makeover” with services allowing him to automate more of his business so that he can rebuild and recover. “I run my whole business with Comcast Business,” said Ramirez. “I couldn’t function without the internet.”

Protect Yourself and Your Customers with Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity has become more of a focal point for businesses as they shifted to a hybrid model. It is recommended that business owners understand the threats that occur as they are happening, and access need based on their analysis- this will also help business alert their employees on scenarios they can look out for. While cybersecurity is enhanced by trained and alert employees, technology can also help. Regular system backups prevent a total loss of information during a breach, and measures such as firewalls, passwords, and end-point protection are all great ways to protect a business.

Since not every small business has the budget for an IT professional, it is important to work with a technology provider that can offer cybersecurity services, as well as guidance and support. Powerful tools that help block threats like malware, ransomware, phishing, and botnet attacks also help to ensure business owners that their networks are protected.

Improve Bandwidth and Connectivity

To take full advantage of automation and cybersecurity measures, a reliable connection is key. Business-grade internet helps ensure ever-changing business needs are met.

Businesses like Salem-based flower shop Green Thumb Flower Box Florist have attributed business growth to a reliable, secure business internet connection.  With speed, security, and agility to handle spikes in demand, Comcast Business can install and monitor these systems, giving business owners one less thing to worry about.

Investing in technology is critical for small businesses to guarantee efficiency, safety, and agility — three vital pieces to a successful business model. Small businesses are the backbone of the Oregon/Southwest Washington economy and upgraded technology makes them even stronger.
