Springing into Service: Comcast Hosts Service Week Throughout the Pacific Northwest

Volunteer

Around the Pacific Northwest, Comcasters ushered in our sunny season through a variety of meaningful service initiatives.

In Portland and Salem, the smell of barbeque venison sloppy joes wafted through Transition Projects and the Union Gospel Mission, respectively, as Comcast volunteers prepared and served the specialty lunch to more than 600 food-insecure individuals.

At Whispering Woods Nature Center, situated between Hillsboro and Beaverton, volunteers teamed up with Hands On Greater Portland and United Way to get their hands dirty with yard care and maintenance for elders in the community. Comcasters also made cards to show support for the residents in the area and got the chance to plant sunflowers, the insignia of volunteer partner H.O.P.E. (Honoring Our Precious Elders).

Inherent in all these activities was a tangible sense of joy and gratitude, with smiling faces, lively conversations, and further development of a vibrant, impact-oriented Comcast community. These initiatives are a part of Spring Service Week, an annual component of Team UP, Comcast’s national employee volunteer program. “UP” stands for “Unlimited Possibilities,” a testament to Comcast’s yearlong, always-on commitment to support the communities it serves.

“Whenever I see anything with the TeamUp logo on it, I know that we’re going to give back in a meaningful way,” says David Hardin, a Manager of External Affairs for Comcast’s Pacific Northwest region. “I’m really proud to get out and wear that Comcast name because we try to lift everybody up, and that’s part of what Comcast does.”

Sonja Muchen, a Senior Analyst of IS Solutions, was excited to bring her daughter to the beautification project at Whispering Woods Nature Center, who she says enjoys the events as much as she does.

“I’ve been at Comcast since 2010, and I’ve been volunteering basically since day one,” Sonja gushed. “To work for a company where the goals and opportunities toward volunteerism align with how I view them has been amazing.”

Since 2001, more than one million Comcast employees, family members, and friends have completed more than seven million service hours. Spring Service Week extends this mission; with the warming weather, blossoming trees, and beautiful landscape that the season brings to the PNR, it continues a company-wide promise rooted in empathy, understanding, and connection.
