Honoring Our Heroes: Comcast’s Commitment to Veterans

Meet Shaun Straus, a Marine Corps Veteran and Technical Operations Supervisor at Comcast. During his nearly two decades at Comcast, Shaun has remained committed to giving back to the communities he serves every day, with a particular focus on honoring veterans in those communities.

“My whole job in the Marines was to help other people, and so it was a really great transition coming out and going into working with Comcast,” said Shaun.

Shaun’s commitment to our veteran community can be felt year-round, from retiring tattered American flags through our Operation Old Glory program to volunteering at events like Spring into Service, a multi-week volunteer effort throughout the Pacific Northwest.

“It is super important for any community to take care of its own. Veterans are part of that,” said Shaun. “They are maybe some of the folks in the most need.”

During Spring into Service, Shaun joined fellow Comcasters at the Salvation Army & Veterans Family Center in Beaverton, Oregon, for a Hunt. Fish. Feed. event in partnership with the Sportsman Channel to prep and serve meals to residents at the center and offer cybersecurity training.

“These are folks who risked everything for everyone else,” said Nate Lyons, U.S. Army Veteran and Chapalin at The Salvation Army Veterans & Family Center. “When they see people in the community helping out, and organizations like Comcast, it just helps bring that smile to see that people in the community actually do care.”

Every year, employees across the company give back through our Team UP always-on volunteer program, and this year, our teammates in the Pacific Northwest made a big difference during Spring into Service. From serving meals, painting community spaces, sorting clothes and household supplies, writing letters to seniors, planting flowers, and spreading bark, giving back to the communities where we live and work is at the core of who we are at Comcast.

This year, Spring into Service drew more than 450 employees, friends, and family members to 17 events that supported 15 community partners, including 9 Lift Zone locations. In total, over 1,700 hours were volunteered and over $111,000 were generated in in-kind contributions, creating a lasting impact across our region.
