Comcast is asking our family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors to join us on May 4 this year for Comcast Cares Day, giving communities across our service area a helping hand. Our volunteer portal enabling you to sign up for projects is open now at www.comcastinthecommunity.com.
Many of our local project partners this year are catalysts for change in supporting community members who may be facing or experiencing aspects of homelessness. Volunteerism and service is a core value at Comcast, and we are thrilled to support our community partners in making change happen together with the power of our volunteer forces on Comcast Cares Day.
For example, Comcast volunteers will repack food to fight hunger at the Oregon Food Bank, beautify the Salvation Army Veterans and Family Center (including building a horseshoe pit!), and make fleece blankets for teens in transition or experiencing homelessness with Binky Patrol.
Our largest project this year will be at Lent School in SE Portland. We will spruce up the school with much needed work, including painting, landscaping, repairing aging basketball courts, and so much more. We’re aiming for more than 300 volunteers there alone! The school community serves a diverse student body, with over half of students qualified for free and reduced priced meals, and they would benefit greatly from some TLC with a few hours of your time.
Come enjoy a morning of breakfast snacks, (get a new t-shirt!) and volunteerism! Celebrate with lunch afterwards as we join together to help make an impact in our communities.
Why homelessness?
Comcast Cares Day is supporting community leaders in helping address the pressing issue of homelessness this year because it impacts nearly every community in the state. According to 2018 figures from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Oregon has the nation’s second highest rate of unsheltered people experiencing homelessness. In addition, Portland’s chronic homelessness has increased at twice the national rate (Transition Projects).
Why Participate in Comcast Cares Day?
You can help the neighborhoods where you live, work, and play in Oregon and SW Washington. Last year’s Comcast Cares Day included volunteer projects from Eugene, Oregon to Castle Rock, Washington. With over 25 Comcast Cares Day projects in the region in this year, chances are that there will be one near you. Studies show that giving to others makes you healthier and happier. Volunteering connects you to others, is good for your mind and body, can advance your career, and brings fun and fulfillment to your life.
About 2019 Comcast Cares Day
On Saturday, May 4, 2019, volunteers will celebrate making change happen again through the support of our community partners nationwide, as well as our employees and their friends and families. Comcast Cares Day is our company’s celebration of that commitment to giving back each and every day of the year. Since 2001, more than one million volunteers have rolled up their sleeves to revitalize neighborhoods and parks, assemble care packages for families in need, host coding workshops and more, all as part of Comcast Cares Day.
Be a part of the nation’s largest corporate volunteer efforts, and sign up for Comcast Cares Day on May 4th through our volunteer portal at www.comcastinthecommunity.com.
