More Than a Backpack: Free ‘Tools For Schools’ Prepare Students

No student should be prohibited from learning because they don’t have the proper supplies or essential tools for their education. For the past 16 years, we’ve helped Portland nonprofit Schoolhouse Supplies donate and pack backpacks of “Tools for Schools” supplies to make sure every student at Faubion School and Cesar Chavez School is prepared.

We assist in Schoolhouse Supplies’ mission to support public education by giving students and teachers free classroom supplies.

“We can only support public education in Portland with the help of partner companies,” said Alice Forbes, executive director of Schoolhouse Supplies. “Comcast, one of our original sponsors, has been a fantastic partner over the years. They not only allow us to purchase products, but enough employee volunteers so that we can distribute free classroom supplies.”

Over the past decade and a half Comcast volunteers have helped pack more than 20,000 backpacks! As Forbes noted, “The students see so much more than just a free backpack, and Comcast’s employee volunteers are so much more than volunteers. They show up with heart and passion.”

Schoolhouse Supplies also runs a Free Store for eligible Portland area school staff and others. They opened their doors in 1999 to be Oregon’s first and only volunteer-run Free Store for teachers. Their mission is to level the playing field for kids to have access to tools that help them achieve academic success and be confident in the classroom. Most teachers receive more than $125 worth of supplies from each “shopping” trip!

At Comcast, we want the kids to know that we have their backs. We have continually supported the efforts of Schoolhouse Supplies to show each child we want them to succeed.
